We stayed at Puerto Vargas, a more scenic lakeside town 20 kms from Puerto Montt. We could see lakes, mountains and volcanoes (inactive, thank goodness!) from the hotel window in Puerto Vargas. Chile has more than 2,000 volcanoes, of which more than 50 are active. The town of Puerto Vargas was founded by German settlers, the architecture, as can be seen in the church, and many of the names over the shop fronts are German
Puerto Montt is a port city in southern Chile, located at the northern end of the Reloncaví Sound. A population of 153,118 (2002 census). perhaps not an lovely city for the tourist to stay in, but we needed to be there to pick up the Navimag Ferry which was to take us and our car south to Puerto Natales. Puerto Vargas was a much better bet to actually stay.
We also took a day to tour round Chiloe Island which was worth the effort of getting there
